Best Areas to Stay in Khiva
Itchan Kala North
The Itchan Kala, the fortified city and heart of Khiva, is surrounded by walls up to 10 meters high. Most of Khiva's landmarks are within the Itchan Kala, along with many affordable, family-run hotels.
The northern part of the fortress is a particularly charming area, featuring narrow backstreets and numerous independently run boutique hotels.
Itchan Kala South
The southern side of the fortress is the most tranquil area. While it has fewer landmarks, it offers an excellent opportunity to experience local life as you walk around the inner side of the walls.
This part of the Itchan Kala feels a bit more residential, with many highly rated family-run hotels and a few restaurants.
Deshan Kala
Khiva's Deshan Kala was the outer fortress of Khiva, providing an additional layer of defense against Turkmen tribes. Although much of the walls have not survived, some gates, palaces, and other landmarks remain in the area.
Hotels in this area are within a 10-minute walk of Itchan Kala and tend to be slightly more affordable.
Rest of Khiva
The outskirts of Khiva may have fewer attractions, but they provide specialized lodging close to the city. Most hotels within city limits are just a 5-10 minute inexpensive taxi ride away.
Hotels within the city include those with swimming pools, easy train station access, and the city's sole 4-star hotel.
